Saflax Bonsai - Buddha Fig / Bodhi Tree

This tree produces heart-shaped, silky-soft leaves and belongs to the mulberry family. It is fast-growing and develops distinct aerial roots. In Buddhist art, it is considered a symbol of the Buddha, as Siddhartha Gautama is said to have experienced enlightenment while sitting under such a tree.

Our Tips:

• Cover cultivation containers with foil and provide them with holes so that the soil does not dry out
• Remove the foil every two to three days for two hours to prevent mould formation
• Keep the potting soil moist but not wet
• Ideal germination temperature: 20°C
• Loves the brightest spot in the apartment - in summer also happy outside in a sunny and wind-protected location
• Water regularly, but let the soil dry out each time first
• Application of special bonsai fertiliser recommended - from April to September every two to three weeks, in winter every six weeks
• Pruning should be done up to three times a year if growth is good - to do this, cut back new shoots from six to two leaves
• One- to two-year-old branches can still be wired - wires should be checked regularly as they can quickly become too tight in summer
• Tensioning of older branches recommended
• Repotting into good bonsai soil recommended every two to three years
• Overwintering in a warm, bright place - especially with dry heating air, ensure frequent spraying of the leaves
