Description

The Ginkgo tree was a symbol of long life, fertility and invincibility in ancient cultures. It has existed for more than 250 million years and can grow to be a thousand years old. The tree has fan-shaped leaves and is neither coniferous nor deciduous. It is resistant to disease and can tolerate even the strongly polluted air of big cities.

Origin:
The ginkgo first appeared on Earth around 250 million years ago. It used to be found in Europe until around 50 million years ago, but was driven out by the ice age. The first ginkgos to be brought to Europe in modern times were in around 1750 when they were introduced to England.

Cultivation:
The tree can be grown in the home all year round. Gently and lightly rub the hazelnut-sized seeds with sandpaper, then soak them overnight in room-temperature water. To plant the seeds, place them on moist soil and cover them with a thin layer of dirt. Germination takes place at 20°-25° C after about 3-4 weeks. If your home is cooler than 20°C, this process can take longer.

Location:
The plants can be planted anywhere, but the seedlings and young plants should be protected from direct or very hot sunlight.

Care:
The ginkgo grows very well in moist, well-drained and nutrient-rich soils. Watering it regularly is important. Otherwise, the young leaves turn yellow and start to go limp. The plant has few side shoots, but if you cut them back from June onwards, your tree will grow more densely.

Wintering:
The tree is hardy, but it is recommended to wrap younger plants or seedlings.
