Saflax Stevia (Sweet Leaf)

Stevia is a great alternative to sugar and other sweeteners. Its leaves have been used as a sweetening agent for centuries and, unlike sugar, contain 0 calories while being up to thirty times sweeter.

Our tips:

• The plant is best grown in a pot.
• Its flexible and hairy shoots produce soft leaves and white flowers in autumn.
• Light germinator - do not cover the seeds with soil when sowing, but only press them down lightly.
• Cover the cultivation container with cling film and poke holes in it to protect the soil from drying out.
• Remove the film every two to three days for two hours to prevent mould formation.
• Place the cultivation container in a bright and very warm location at around 25 to 30°C.
• Keep the potting soil moist but not wet.
• A slightly windy location can help prevent pest infestation.
• Prune the tips of the shoots for bushier growth.
• Cut back dead shoots in autumn.
• After flowering or in spring, cut the entire plant back to about hand-height.
• Bring indoors when outside temperatures drop below 10°C and place in a bright spot by a window.
• In winter, water only enough to prevent the root ball from drying out.
