Description

This essential culinary and medicinal herb thrives in light, calcareous (chalky) soil and is perfectly suited for container gardening. As an evergreen subshrub, thyme provides year-round structure and fragrance to any garden border or herb patch.

Our Tips:

  • Light Germinator: These seeds require light to sprout. Do not cover them with soil; simply press them gently into the surface of your seed-starting mix.
  • Timing: Start seeds indoors: (Start seeds indoors:) from mid-March, and plant out in their final position from mid-May.
  • Soil Adaptability: While it prefers light soil, thyme can grow in heavier clay soils provided they are well-drained and do not become waterlogged.
  • Pruning for Winter: Avoid cutting the plant back too hard late in the season; leaving some growth helps prevent "winter-kill" or losses due to frost.
  • Winter Protection: In particularly cold regions, consider covering the plants with brushwood or horticultural fleece during the frost period.
  • Drought Tolerant: Once established, thyme handles dry spells exceptionally well.
  • Pot Culture: Highly recommended for pots and troughs on a sunny patio.
  • Maintenance: Prune vigorously after flowering, but ensure this is done no later than mid-September to allow new growth to harden before winter.
